This walk takes you up to the north west of Kingley Vale and reaches a high point of 195 metres. The walk is 3.4 miles long. There are several footpaths so I recommend taking a map with you, preferably an electronic one with GPS. Near the end of the walk there is a memorial to a “Hurricane” pilot who crashed in 1940. There is parking for a few cars on the road verge around the start position (GPS 50.89554, -0.86277 - OS: SU800112) shown by a red flag on the map.
The Memorial says:In this field on 1st November 1940 Pilot Officer Bolestaw Wtasnowolski V.M., K.W. Royal Air Force 213 Squadron RAF Tangmere (formerly of the Polish Air Force) died aged 23 when his “Hurricane” V7221 crashed following aerial combat with a German Me109. He died defending Britain, Poland and Freedom.
